When you do not understand the terminology, you cannot challenge their architectural decisions or their pricing. You nod along, sign the contract, and hope for the best. This is a fatal error.

"Microservices Architecture"
What they say: "We need to use a microservices architecture to ensure infinite scalability and enterprise-grade resilience."
The brutal truth: Microservices mean breaking a single application into dozens of smaller, independent applications. For 95% of businesses, this is massive overkill. It introduces terrifying complexity into your deployment and monitoring processes.
Unless you have a dedicated DevOps team and are handling millions of concurrent users, you need a well-structured Monolith. Agencies sell microservices because it allows them to bill for hundreds of hours of unnecessary infrastructure setup.
"Serverless"
What they say: "We will build this using serverless technology so you only pay for what you compute."
The brutal truth: "Serverless" does not mean there are no servers. It means you are renting server execution time from AWS or Google on a per-millisecond basis.
While it can be cost-effective for specific background tasks, building an entire complex application on serverless functions (like AWS Lambda) can lead to nightmare debugging scenarios and unpredictable latency (cold starts). Demand to know the exact use case before agreeing to this architecture.
"Blockchain Integration"

Agencies pitch blockchain because it is a trendy buzzword that allows them to charge a premium. Unless your business model fundamentally relies on trustless, decentralized consensus among adversarial parties, a standard relational database is faster, cheaper, and infinitely more maintainable.
"Machine Learning Algorithms"
What they say: "Our proprietary machine learning algorithms will optimize your workflows automatically."
The brutal truth: Most agencies claiming to use "Machine Learning" are just writing basic if/then statements in Python. Or, they are simply sending your data via API to OpenAI.
Do not pay for custom ML models unless they have a team of data scientists who can explain the training data, the model architecture, and the validation metrics. If they cannot explain the math, they are selling you a lie.
"Agile Methodology"
